Dara provides direct services to families through its social methodology, The Family Action plan, or Dara Method, which was developed together with the communities we serve. The methodology provides services, tools, information and opportunities for families in health, education, income generation, education, housing and citizenship and aims do help families become agents of their own destiny.
Based on the experience with health and human development of vulnerable
families, Dara works to influence public policy on poverty and development. Dara
has become a public policy on poverty alleviation in the city of Belo Horizonte, a
program called “Citizen Family”; Dara has offered consultation to the Ministry of
Citizenship in the monitoring and evaluation of the methodologies practiced in the
national network of Social Assistance Centers; and in the city of Itu in São Paulo,
the methodology was implemented in a municipal program called Cuidar Itu.
To expand the inter-sectoral work that Dara carries out, Dara shares knowledge and information with academia, civil society organizations, governments, media, businesses and social entrepreneurs. To help in this effort Dara entered into partnership with other social organizations and launched the Poverty Eradication Hub (www.hubep.org.br) with other social organizations. The Hubep is a multisector, collaborative initiative to promote the eradication of poverty.
The Institute joins forces with Brazilian and international partners into a to encourage volunteerism as a way to engage civil society in the challenges and solutions to fight poverty. In more that 30+ years, more than 1,600 volunteers have enabled and been impacted by Dara’s work. Instituto Dara’s work contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals that address key development challenges faced in the world.
Instituto Dara received an honorable mention in the 2018 SDG Brazil Award offered by the United Nations.

Instituto Dara (formerly Saúde Criança Renascer) was founded in 1991 by physician Vera Cordeiro and a group of professionals from Hospital da Lagoa, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Over decades of operation, Dara has been perfecting an innovative social methodology to fight poverty: the Family Action Plan (PAF), a multidimensional and customizable tool, based on five pillars - health, education, housing, revenue and citizenship.
Our positive impact on families has proven successful over the years. Research from Georgetown University/USA (2013) proved that, three to five years after discharge from our program, family revenue virtually doubles and hospital readmissions drop by 86%.
Instituto Dara has shown that making social inclusion a reality and fighting structural poverty in an integrated and effective way is possible.
