To promote health and human development through the implementation and dissemination of an intersectoral approach to fighting poverty.
A healthy and sustainable world in which everyone has equal opportunities and rights and has the leading role in their own development.
Social justice, autonomy, integrity, empathy and transparency.
Carried out through the Family Action Plan (PAF), its own social technology was co-created in partnership with the public served. It aims to empower the families served to become protagonists of their own development by providing them with knowledge, tools and opportunities to develop their skills in the areas of Health, Education, Revenue Generation, Housing and Citizenship.
Based on its experience, Dara seeks to influence the creation of public poverty fighting and human development policies. Some results in these areas include: the “Citizen Family” public policy in Belo Horizonte; the partnership with the Ministry of Citizenship in consulting to improve the monitoring methodologies of the Social Assistance Reference Center (Cras); and the implementation of the PAF methodology in the municipality of Itu/SP, in partnership with the City Government and Instituto Cuidar Itu.
To expand its work, Instituto Dara understands that it is essential to share its intersectoral approach with the Academia, governments, media, civil society, companies, and social entrepreneurs. In partnership with other social organizations, Dara launched the Poverty Eradication Hub – HubEP, a multisectoral, 100% collaborative initiative for poverty eradication.
The Institute has joined forces with national and international partners into a network that encourages volunteering as a way to engage civil society in the challenges and solutions to fight poverty. More than 1,600 volunteers have enabled and been impacted by Dara’s work over more than 30 years. In addition, through its own communication channels, the Institute seeks to mobilize society for the cause of fighting poverty.
Instituto Dara’s work contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals that address key development challenges people face around the world.
Instituto Dara’s contribution to this fight was recognized in 2018 through an honorable mention in the SDG Brazil Award, offered by the United Nations Organization.

Instituto Dara (formerly Saúde Criança Renascer) was founded in 1991 by physician Vera Cordeiro and a group of professionals from Hospital da Lagoa, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Over decades of operation, Dara has been perfecting an innovative social methodology to fight poverty: the Family Action Plan (PAF), a multidimensional and customizable tool, based on five pillars - health, education, housing, revenue and citizenship.
Our positive impact on families has proven successful over the years. Research from Georgetown University/USA (2013) proved that, three to five years after discharge from our program, family revenue virtually doubles and hospital readmissions drop by 86%.
Instituto Dara has shown that making social inclusion a reality and fighting structural poverty in an integrated and effective way is possible.
