On May 11, the DARA Institute participated in the Seminar on Social Technologies and Innovation: For a Social Technology Policy for Rio, an event held at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. The event brought together government authorities, representatives of civil society and academia to discuss the role of social technologies in the construction of public policies that can provide support for sustainable development efforts and the transformation of territories.
The event was sponsored by the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation in partnership with the State University of Rio de Janeiro. The seminar sought to build ways to recognize support and disseminate social technologies in the city Rio de Janeiro.
The meeting took place between 2 pm and 8 pm, and included the presentation of posters of urban social technology initiative. After an opening panel, break out thematic groups gathered. At the closing plenary, main reflections and recommendations by the different groups were shared.
The breakout sessions had five themes:
- Education;
- Health and Quality of Life;
- Work and Income
- Sustainable Cities
- Democratic Governance and Social Participation.
DARA was part of the Sustainable Cities group. In this group, the discussion was around social technologies that promote sustainability, territorial development and climate challenges. In this group, Dara´s Family Action Plan was presented as an urban social technology that contributes to the integration of public policies, the strengthening of families and the development of territories. Dara´s methodology was acknowledged as extremely relevant.
At the end of the meeting, representatives of each break group presented a summary of the discussions, consolidated proposals for the strengthening of social technologies in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.
An outcome of the meeting, is the paper, “For a Social Technology Policy for Rio: Experiences, Learning and Recommendations of the I Seminar on Social Technologies and Innovation”, that includes the discussions, experiences and recommendations of the participants was published. DARA ‘s participation in the event reinforces its commitment to social innovation and the construction of solutions that promote the development of families and contribute to the formulation of more effective and sustainable public policies.
