On June 11, the 1st Brazilian Housing and Climate Forum, was held in Brasilia, bringing together representatives from the government, civil society and academia to discuss how climate change affects the right to housing and to broaden the debate on city resilience and equality.
During the event, a main theme was the impact of the climate crisis on vulnerable populations, especially those that live in high-risk areas and in precarious housing. The importance of investments in prevention, the urbanization of vulnerable territories, social leasing, improved housing policies and programs such as Housing First Program, which recognizes that housing is the first step to accessing other civil rights were discussed.
The forum also showed that housing improvements, technical/professional support and monitoring of home improvements are fundamental for appropriate climate adaptation, risk reduction, general health and improved quality of life for families. In conclusion, the meeting underlined the importance of decent housing, health policies, urban and social development, and protection policies to face the climate crisis.
